A number of taxes must be paid when registering a purchased or imported vehicle, in order to obtain a Greek licence plate.
Road/Circulation Tax (Τέλη Κυκλοφορίας Αυτοκίνητων και Μοτοσικλετών) for all cars and motorcycles with Greek licence plates must be paid annually between 1 November and 31 December in order for the owners to obtain the required Special Card (Ειδικό Σήμα). This tax is calculated based on the engine size, date of manufacture and type of vehicle. It can be paid at most banks, the Post Office or the Tax Office.
A resident or non-resident of Greece, who wishes to avoid paying this tax, must remove the vehicle from circulation and deposit the vehicle’s licence plate and circulation permit with the owner’s Tax Office (ΔΟΥ).
